Music Notes (Get it?!)
Two quick things. One, I guess it must mean that I'm getting old when CNN starts writing gratuitous stories about bands I like, but I'll just have to cope.
More importantly (or less--you decide!), a friend of mine from high school is in what strikes me as the most contrived band since the Rutles. I have mixed emotions. On one hand, it's nice to see him get paid. On another hand, he was born into considerable wealth and would have been fine withou a record deal. On another hand, I always looked down on the guy's taste in music--he was into shit like Winger and Extreme. On a completely different hand, I haven't seen the guy in probably eight years. And, on yet another hand, I was friends with the guy, and probably would be again if I ever saw him. Which means I guess I have to wish him well, even though I think his band is an affront to everything our boys fought and died for in Iwo Jima.
And it just dawned on me that he and I chanced to seperately discover Nick Cave on the same night in the early '90s when, after a night of hanging out together, we went to our respective parents' homes, turned on Letterman, and watched the Bad Seeds perform "I Had a Dream, Joe." Mt friend and I spoke the next day. I told him how amazed I'd been by what even David Letterman said was a "powerful performance." My friend sneered and said he was sure Leterman was being sarcastic. So, again, you might possibly see why I am torn.
Whatever. You don't know me, motherfuckers.
